How to start bmx racing
Welcome to the world of BMX racing!
Whilst it might seem daunting to begin with, it doesn't need to be. We're here to help.
To start, head down to the club on one of our Monday training nights to try out the track. Our Facebook Page will have up to date information on our calendar and events.
You're also more than welcome to attend one of our Wednesday race nights and cheer on our riders as they speed around the track.
To start racing, you'll need the following at a minimum:-
- appropriate clothing including a long sleeve top or jumper, long pants and enclosed shoes
- a positive and can-do attitude
The club can provide the following for hire (or you're welcome to bring your own):
- full face helmet
- gloves (any that cover your hands and fingers are fine, but our riders prefer BMX/MX style)
- appropriate bike for the rider age class
When you're ready, you're welcome to join our Wednesday Night Racing.
We typically run 2 or 3 series a year, and fun club racing events throughout the year.
When racing, please remember to:
- Register (or 'nom') in the class that you wish to race (if you have any questions, please ask)
- Warm up your body ready for racing during the practice session
- Be ready for racing from 7:00pm
- Be on time for noms - if you're running late, please let us know
- Remember that you'll normally have at least 3 'motos' (races) and a final before the night is finished

race classes
Our youngest riders start out as 'Mini Wheelers' on balance bikes from the age of 2. From there, they graduate to a pedal bike as a 'Sprocket' (fondly known as 'Sprocket Rockets'). Typically, there are three different classes for sprockets: 5 and under; 6 and under; and, 7 and under. Our 8 year + riders start racing more competitively in our aged riders class. These riders must have a transponder which records their times around the track, taking the guess work out of place finishes. Riders will race in their age groups from 8 to 30+. For those that love the sport, they then have the option of moving on to our Superclass category, including Junior Superclass. |
Head on over to AusCycling to sign up for a Free Trial Membership which allows you to race at any BMX track Australia wide for 4 weeks. After that time, an annual membership will be required to continue racing. You can apply for a Sports Voucher to help with the cost of the annual licence, if eligible.
